Pricing and licensing

Is LineDesk genuinely free?

Yes. It is free for personal and commercial use, with no time limits, no cap on devices and no features reserved for a paid plan. No paid edition exists, so what you download is the complete product.

What is the business model if the software is free?

LineDesk began as an internal tool at Lineup Soluciones for supporting our own clients. Publishing it free costs us very little because video and control travel directly between the two computers: our servers only introduce the machines at the start and use almost no bandwidth.

If that ever changes we will say so clearly and in advance. What will not happen is you opening the program one day to find the feature you relied on is now behind a paywall.

Why did you decide not to charge for LineDesk?

From our own experience. We paid for the TeamViewer licences we needed in order to work and, some time later, we were asked to pay monthly for those same licences we had already bought. That is where LineDesk came from: we would rather have our own tool than pay twice for the same thing.

Since we had already built it, we publish it free so nobody else has to go through that. The full story is in LineDesk vs TeamViewer.

Can I use it at my company?

Yes, at no cost and with no cap on technicians or devices. There is no commercial-use detection and no lockout.

Will ads appear later on?

No. LineDesk shows no advertising, bundles no third-party software and does not sell usage data.

Security and privacy

How secure is the connection?

Video, control, chat and files travel directly between the two computers over WebRTC with mandatory DTLS-SRTP end-to-end encryption. There is no option to connect unencrypted.

Our server only exchanges the initial credentials so the two PCs can find each other. After that it is out of the loop: it never sees your screen, your clicks or your files.

Can someone connect to my PC without me knowing?

No, unless you enable it. The normal path requires you to accept a prompt with one click: whoever sits at the computer decides.

The only way in without acceptance is if you configured an unattended access password and the person connecting knows it. That feature is optional and off by default.

How do I cut access if I am uncomfortable?

From the LineDesk icon in the system tray, using the cut-access option. The session ends instantly and the other end receives the reason, so it does not retry on its own.

Where are passwords stored?

The unattended access password is stored derived with PBKDF2-SHA256 and a unique salt, never in plain text. Address-book passwords are encrypted with Windows DPAPI and tied to your user account, so copying that file to another machine achieves nothing.

Do you collect usage data?

There is no commercial telemetry and no user profiling. On the website we only count how many times the installer was downloaded, in aggregate and without cookies.

Installation and requirements

Which operating systems are supported?

Version 0.7.4 runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, and version 0.7.4 on macOS 10.15 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon), both for controlling and being controlled, and the two can be mixed. For 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1 there is a separate compatibility installer, same version and same features except hiding the screen from the client. A Linux build is in development and there is no mobile app: iOS and Android do not let an app take over the desktop.

Why does Windows show a warning during installation?

Because the installer does not have a code-signing certificate yet, so SmartScreen flags an "unknown publisher" the first time. That is normal for new software and does not indicate anything wrong with the file.

To continue: More info and then Run anyway. Always download from the official page rather than third-party download sites.

Do I need to open ports on my router?

No. LineDesk negotiates the connection the same way a browser video call does and traverses most home and office NATs with no configuration. Only very restrictive corporate networks may need help from the network team.

Does it need to be installed on both computers?

Yes. It is the same program on both sides: either machine can control or be controlled — there is no separate "client" and "server" build.

How much space does it use?

The installer is about 84 MB and the installed program takes roughly 250 MB on disk.

Everyday use

How many machines can I manage?

As many as you want. There is no cap on address-book devices or simultaneous sessions, and no plan that limits them.

Can I send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the remote machine?

No. Windows reserves that combination for the system and no user-level program can generate it; only products that install a system-level service manage it. For the same reason, the UAC prompt is not visible remotely even when LineDesk is elevated.

Can I control a program running as administrator?

Yes, but LineDesk has to be elevated too: Windows will not let a normal process send clicks to a more privileged one. On the remote machine, go to Settings → Administrator permissions and turn on Start LineDesk as administrator at sign-in: from the next sign-in it starts elevated on its own, without the Windows prompt appearing every time. The app says on screen when that machine is running elevated. Two things this does not change: the UAC screen still cannot be seen remotely (Windows draws it on a separate desktop), and if the person using that machine is not an administrator, there are no privileges to inherit.

What happens if the internet drops mid-session?

LineDesk tries to repair the connection and, failing that, rebuilds the session entirely. It keeps retrying until you close the tab, so you can leave a machine working and find it connected later.

Can I transfer an entire folder?

Yes, with its full subfolder tree. The dual-pane browser shows your drive on one side and the remote drive on the other. Files travel directly between the two PCs without passing through any server.

Does it work with multiple monitors?

Yes. Remote displays appear as sub-tabs and switch instantly, without dropping the video or reconnecting.

Can I blank the remote screen while I work?

Yes, with privacy mode. A curtain covers the far screen; the person there sees only a notice and the chat, while you keep viewing and controlling the real desktop.

Compared with other software

How does it differ from AnyDesk?

Mainly in price and limits: LineDesk is free for professional use too, with no cap on devices or sessions. AnyDesk wins on platform coverage, session recording and its central console. The full breakdown is in the complete comparison.

How does it differ from TeamViewer?

LineDesk has no "commercial use detected" mechanism and never cuts sessions on time, because there is no paid edition to protect. TeamViewer wins on platforms, meetings and formal certifications. See the complete comparison.

And versus Windows Remote Desktop (RDP)?

RDP is excellent inside a local network, but using it over the internet means opening ports or setting up a VPN, and Windows Home editions cannot accept connections at all. LineDesk works over the internet with no configuration and on any edition of Windows 10 or 11.
